Who Is Susan Boyle?

Susan Boyle is a Scottish singer who was born on 1st April, 1961. A singer her whole life, she was discovered in 2009 when she auditioned for Britain’s Got Talent. She sang “I Dreamed A Dream” from Les Miserables. In November 2009, she released her first album, which became the bestselling debut album of all time in the UK. The album also topped the Billboard 200 chart for six weeks straight, and Boyle made £5 million! But what prompted her to lose weight? Find out next.

Why Did Susan Boyle Lose Weight?

Susan Boyle had been struggling with her weight since her childhood. In fact, she was regularly bullied for being overweight and how she looked. However, it was only after she was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes in 2012 that she decided to start living a healthy life. Diabetes prevents the cells from taking up glucose and converting it into usable energy. It happens either when the cells become resistant to insulin (the hormone that prompts the cells’ uptake of glucose from the bloodstream), or when the body fails to produce enough insulin. This results in a spike in blood glucose levels, which makes the body even more resistant to insulin. Physiologically, patients with diabetes feel hungry frequently as the cells cannot detect sugar (even though it is there!) to produce energy. People with diabetes also suffer from lethargy, depression, and high blood pressure. After Susan Boyle was declared diabetic by her doctors, it was time for her to take her health seriously, weight loss being a major aspect of that decision. Let’s find out what steps she took to live a healthy and better life.

How Did Susan Boyle Lose Weight?

Susan Boyle lost weight by following these three steps: Let’s see how she managed to adapt these seemingly easy steps in her lifestyle to lose weight.

1. Remove Sugar

As soon as Susan Boyle was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, her doctors asked her to eliminate sugar from her diet. When you are diabetic, either your body produces less insulin, or your cells become resistant to it. This causes the sugar in your body to remain unused. This unused sugar gets stored in the body as fat and further deteriorates the body’s metabolism. In an interview with The Mirror, Boyle said, “I need to stop eating sweeties and cakes. It’s the bane of my life.” To remove sugar from her diet, she had to avoid the following foods and drinks.

Sugars To Avoid

Sugary beverages like packaged fruit/vegetable juices, milkshakes, energy drinks, and sodas Processed foods Refined or artificial sweeteners Breakfast cereals Cakes, pastries, ice creams, and candies Alcohol Store-bought salad dressings, ketchup, and sauces

Here’s what she was allowed to eat.

Sugars To Eat

Fruits And Fruit Juices: They contain natural sugars with dietary fiber, vitamins, and minerals, which are good for your health, digestion, and skin. Veggies: Vegetables have good carbs (carbs are broken down into sugar) that help in better digestion and help flush toxins from your colon. Cane Sugar Or Dark Brown Sugar: Cane sugar and/or dark brown sugar is less processed and healthier than refined sugar and artificial sugar.

Apart from this, she was allowed to consume a good amount of protein and healthy fats found in nuts and seeds to balance her diet. But only cutting off sugar doesn’t work. Here’s the second thing she did to lose the flab.

2. Workout

Exercise is essential for weight loss and good health. Susan Boyle knew that exercising would help her shed the flab quickly, which, in turn, could help fight diabetes. She started walking 2 miles every day. Walking is a low-impact exercise that is easy on the joints. It can also help reduce blood sugar levels (1). This lowers the effect of diabetes on the body. Boyle was about 50-years-old at that time, and it was important not to hurt her knees in the process of working out. So, walking was the only way she could start burning the fat.

3. Take Garcinia Cambogia Supplement

Garcinia cambogia is a tropical, tart fruit that grows in Southeast Asia. The pulp of this fruit is dried and used in foods to add a tangy flavor (much like tamarind). Recently, it has started being used as a weight loss supplement. It works by suppressing your appetite, burning fat by improving your metabolism, and boosting your mood. Recently, Boyle was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome that developed due to a lack of oxygen supply to her brain when she was a baby. Due to her condition, she stopped touring in 2015. However, that did not stop her from singing or taking care of her health. You can also start taking care of your health today, and weight loss will happen on its own. Just weed out your bad lifestyle habits, and you will soon start to glow!
